Social media is the worst form of media, besides all those others. Apologies to Winston Churchill for repurposing his famous quote on democracy. Isn’t that what we often do with social media, repurpose quotes and video (or sometimes just copy and paste)?

For independent filmmakers social media can be incredibly powerful and maybe Churchill would agree: democratizing. A filmmaker can engage with people via social media from the moment a project is conceived, share video throughout the process, find new stories to document and share with that same audience, and generate support for a film.

“On Friday 13th, sometime before 9PM, Graham Linehan had had a great idea he called Bad Movie Club. I heard about it from Phil Jupitus’ twitterings. I’d hastily followed him before I realised it was THE Phil Jupitus, dur!

The idea was brilliant-ish and was for everyone to get hold of and watch a really bad movie called The Happening (trust me it is really bloody awful) and after all hitting PLAY at 9PM everyone would be free to use the “#badmovieclub” hashtag whilst twittering.”

“Since the birth of the moving picture, film has played an important role in the way people experience culture worldwide. This is apparent at the 400 film festivals which take place around the globe each year. These events give talented artists a venue to promote their work in front of a qualified, interested audience.

Like any dynamic art form, film is forever changing. New digital media have placed unknown independent artists on the same playing field as their more established, commercially-backed counterparts. Moreover, as access to cyberspace has become more universal, reaching the right audience has never been so easy.’

“Being fairly new to the filmmaking scene and living in Las Vegas, as opposed to L.A. or New York, I must say that I find social media to be an effective and inexpensive networking tool. I launched Filmmakers Notebook in July and with the exception of conferences and seminars I attended in Los Angeles and the people I’ve become acquainted with locally, I really didn’t know anyone in the film world.

When you’re starting out, this severely limits your ability to find colleagues to collaborate or share ideas with. I’ve found that social media, particularly Twitter and Facebook , have helped to fill this gap.”

Do you have a favorite filmmaking or movie quote? Good…because I would like your help!

On March 18, 2009, I started to ask everyone who followed me on Twitter to send me their favorite filmmaking or movie quote. My goal was to create a PDF ebook of all these fabulous 2009 quotes and give it away on Twitter and my blog starting Friday, January 1, 2010.

So far I have received 456 quotes from over 420 Twitterer’s! That is truly amazing.

Now I’m asking you for some help. I would like to get up to 500 film quotes by midnight December 31 if I can.

Impossible you say!

Not if we all use the power of Social Media to spread the word. So, if you have some quotes you want to share, please send them to me. Also, please retweet this post and let all your friends now about it as well.

No matter what, I will be releasing this ebook (34 pages so far) on Friday, January 1 for all the filmmakers and movie buffs out there in the Twitterverse!!!

Thanks.

The technology has been in place for years. However, the price of Internet-connected HDTVs was, until recently, out of reach for most. No longer.

High-definition TVs were among the top sellers on Black Friday, according to ShopperTrak RCT Corp. And just in time, the major social networks are racing to make the entire experience more interactive via number of channels–not just cable TV, but gaming consoles too.”
