“When the economy takes a dive, Hollywood is always there to pick up the pieces. But with the current trend of recession, can blockbusters continue to turn a profit?

It is considered, at times, that with the steady decline of the U.S. and world economies the ticket sales in the film industry would rise in inverse proportions. This may have been understood, at one point, to be a relatively reliable fact. It only makes sense, considering this is not the first time this sort of situation has come about.

During the Wall Street Crash of 1929 ticket sales went soaring, as it was considerably one of the cheapest forms of entertainment at the time. It has also been recognized that in the several other recessions in the last few decades that this fact has been proven true as well.”

“My goodness! If one were to believe all the news reports, it would appear that the entire motion picture industry has just fallen into the Pacific and sunk slowly beneath the waves. Gee gosh golly, what’s wrong with everybody? Last I heard, Variety and the MPAA were telling everybody that everything was okey dokey.

OK, as some of us already knew, they were simply bluffing. Yes, it really isn’t okey dokey. In fact, it is getting kind of poopy out there. Just look at all of the senior executives currently cleaning out their desks. The first round (and I do mean it’s only the beginning) has already hit hard, and the headlines are taking on all of the subtlety of a news report on a mob massacre.”

“People often complain that movies are nothing like real life, that even movies based on true stories take many liberties with the facts.

It’s an odd lament, given that movies are one of our premier forms of escapism. One could argue that the very reason for the enduring popularity of movies is that they are nothing like real life, that they let us experience different lives and different worlds.

This is especially true when our world becomes a bit too much to bear. Like right now, for example. During the past six plus months (and for the next one, two years?) we’ve been consumed by the economic turmoil not seen since the Great Depression, so it stands to reason that we welcome something that gives us respite from our woes.”

“With each week’s report on the world economy looking grimmer than the last, there are a lot of reasons to be depressed. Layoffs are rampant, credit has dried up, and just the simple act of listening to NPR on the way home from work makes me want to hole up in my house with a shotgun, some Pop-Tarts, and my Roku player. For indie filmmakers used to making something out of nothing, however, it’s business as usual — and it may even be a better environment for those who know how to operate on the cheap.”
