“The unprecedented power of the Internet is threatening to bring down traditional barriers in the most closed industry in the world – the film industry.

The rules could well be changing in the film industry. Highly guarded personal connections and contacts could be fighting a losing battle with the speed and accessibility of vast online communities.

Suddenly the power in the game is shifting hands. As online film communities threaten to sweep control away from the traditional power holders, wise use of the new phenomenon can help movie-makers gain all the benefits of the internet. And whilst a multitude of new projects and talent can very quickly gain tremendous exposure, those same projects and talent can also serve as a valuable resource to sustain an industry that is undergoing rapid changes.”

Of course, I disagreed, because frankly how else can I make a decision about where to spend my hard earned time and money? But if I had to blame anyone for keeping me away from the movie theater that day, I’m going to have to blame the Internet.”

“This post could really be for anyone, but I will focus it on the emerging filmmaker because I think it is just as important to showcase yourself online as it is to showcase your film.

I check out the online profile of everyone I meet or am about to meet. It may sound a little stalker-like, but I like to know who I am talking to and what we have in common. If I can’t find out anything about you when I Google your name, it is as if you do not exist. Well, your personal brand doesn’t exist at least. So what are you doing to build your personal brand? What methods can be used?”

I have been actively promoting and marketing myself on the Internet since 1996. In 2000, I created my website, www.actioncutprint.com and last year I created this blog. (As of March 3, 2009, both of these sites have been on the first page of Google for the past six months under the search term “film directing.”)

Over the past few years, many filmmakers have emailed me to ask my help in showing them how to promote and market themselves or their films on the Internet. I have replied to many of you individually and gave you as much information as I could to help you out. (I even created and new blog with my partner, Trilby Jeeves, which we are still developing, called “Internet Marketing and Social Networking for Creative People.”)

But now it is time to get a specific idea of what you are thinking when it comes to understanding the proper methods of Internet Marketing and Social Networking.

With that in mind, I would appreciate if you could take a moment to participate in a short Online Survey by answering a few questions on what you would like to know more about regarding promoting and marketing yourself on the Internet.

Your answers to this survey will give me the tools to create several information products that will help filmmakers to find work, promote themselves and market their films on the Internet.

10 Question Survey
==================

This short Online survey is strictly confidential. You do not need to put your name or email address on this survey – it is completely anonymous.

Please click the link below to start the Online survey: http://snipurl.com/d1rkw

Once you have completed the survey, click on “Done” at the bottom of the page. That’s all you have to do.

Thank you very much for your help.

Peter

WHISTLER — Filmmakers in 2008 are in a Catch-22 situation. Do they put their movie online for free and try to create a buzz (and, they hope, a revenue stream), or do they hold off and try to sell it conventionally through broadcast licences and distribution deals?

A panel of experts at Whistler could not answer this question Thursday, but they recognized the industry is in a major transition, and provided examples of how the two systems can mesh successfully. Read the rest of this article.
