On Saturday, November 7, Trilby and I had a “Meet & Greet” with several filmmakers in Los Angeles at the Santa Monica Playhouse. Most of these filmmakers were subscribers to my free filmmaking ezine, “The Director’s Chair.”

It was wonderful to see the filmmakers who showed up and to realize that, even with all our different backgrounds and experience, we all have more in common than we think. We talked about getting jobs, filmmaking, editing, script writing, distribution, social media and more…

In my workshops and my online courses, I always talk about PASSION – because that is the one thing you need to get you up in the morning; it is the one thing that will keep you moving forward in this business. And everyone in the room had it.

So I would like to say thanks to the following filmmakers who further ignited my passion for this business:

Jason Brubaker (and Maggie)
Arati Misro
Sheri Candler
Halyna Hutchins
Paul James Tierney
Robert Lee
Tico Clark

“What we learn as Editor’s of movies is that we develop a very close relationship with the film image. Each movie production shoots and hands us many hours of material. We look at this material first as independent shots of different sizes and angles. We look again as it is being digitized onto the hard drives.”

“I am one of those insane people that decided to fund their own film. Okay, maybe not insane, but it was just something I decided to do, or rather felt I had to.

I am glad I decided to follow my heart and my passion because this is one of the most difficult things I have ever done. I’ve put myself in the position where I have risked everything financially but I wouldn’t have done it any other way, because I wanted creative control and didn’t want to compromise my vision.”

The number of members in the film camera department depends on the kind of film being shot. Big-budget feature films usually have a larger crew than a low-budget film, TV commercial, or music video. It also depends on whether the production is union or non-union. The typical camera department usually consists of the following crew members:

Director of Photography (D.P.)
Camera Operator (C.O.)
First Assistant Cameraman (1st A.C.) (Focus Puller)
Second Assistant Cameraman (2nd A.C.) (Clapper/Loader)
Loader (optional position on larger multicamera productions)

This list is based on a union, big-budget feature film and includes only the basic crew positions. All of the following lists of camera department personnel responsibilities are based on a union, big-budget feature film. Each job is different, so not all of these jobs will be done on every show. Read rest of article here.

The feature article this month is called “The Entrepreneur Movie Director/Producer” by Solomon Mac-Auley. “I have spent the last three years or so researching, studying and trying to understand why we as artistes don’t do well in business. I found out that as artistes we think as artistes not as business people. I went really deep into understanding entrepreneurship and I found the answers.”

The May issue of The Director’s Chair was published on May 19/08. The feature article this month is “How to Get into the Music Video Business” by Jamal Johnson.

Jamal started in music video production over 12 years ago first doing music videos for independent artists in the Hampton Roads area of Virginia, but after his 4th “indie” music video, he had his first major music video for U-God of the Wu-Tang Clan which aired on B.E.T’s Rap City.

“MUSIC VIDEO DEVELOPMENT TRAINING SYSTEM”
I’m just letting you know of a very special offer from Jamal Johnson. Jamal “Jag” Johnson, whose work has been seen on MTV, MTV2 and BET, has a new product out that shows you how to make money shooting music videos for indie and major music artists. It’s called the “Music Video Development Training System” featuring Skillz.

The “Music Video Development Training System” is designed with the beginner and expert in mind. It doesn’t matter if you’ve never touched a camera in your life or if you’re already in the music video industry full time!

I don’t endorse many products, but after reviewing Jamal’s product (I was very impressed with the valuable content and the production quality) I thought you might be interested in his offer.
