Many people wish to be a film creator but don’t comprehend the way to attempt it. They picture themselves to be another Martin Scorcese but don’t understand the difference between a producer or a movie director. They like to sit back and watch motion pictures yet have no idea about the way one is produced.

Some may utilize their own personal camcorders to create their unique styles of motion pictures. They have movie scripts inside their head but don’t recognize how to follow them. Many individuals who have this specific drive make a decision annually to sign up in art classes to get a film making education.

“Film schools have long served as launching pads for film and television careers, and now most major universities offer at least some sort of filmmaking courses, even for those not looking to jump into entertainment. A number of schools have begun looking academically at the impacts of new media on culture and the future of entertainment, but so far the more practical nuts and bolts of web series production and distribution have yet to make it onto into the university course lists.

In Los Angeles, two new Web TV education programs have launched this month looking to fill that gap —and at a fraction of a film school tuition. NewMedialocity and Web TV Workshop both offer four-week intro courses for creative types looking to learn how to get an original web series project off the ground. Both take the approach of teaching through experienced guest teachers—those brave souls who for better or worse have learned some of the internet’s unique lessons and opportunities over the past few years.”

“The rush to film school continues unabated, and considering the film industry’s growth and bright prospects in the emerging Cable Age, the trend may be only in its infancy. But is film school really worth the considerable amount of time, effort and money it demands? Would it be possible to redirect those resources and make an independent film instead, learning the ropes in the process?

How naive a notion is that, bearing in mind that it wasn’t so long ago that hard-won apprenticeships were the only “film schools,” and that the quality of movies didn’t seem to suffer. We decided to ask several prominent directors if they believe changing times and new technologies have made formal film school education necessary, or whether a young would-be moviemaker might still be able to bypass the instructional leagues and jump right into The Show.”

“The sci-fithriller District 9 was one of last year’s left-field hits. Produced for a modest $35 million, it has reportedly grossed over $200 million worldwide and landed four Academy Award nominations, including best picture.

It was conceived in New Zealand and shot in South Africa, but District 9’s success meant a lot to the Vancouver film community — particularly two of the city’s film schools.

Forty-two graduates of the Vancouver Film School worked on District 9, including director/writer Neill Blomkamp and his co-writer Terri Tatchell, who received an Oscar nomination for best screenplay adaptation.”

“If you’re thinking of going to film school, you need an insider’s opinion on what going to film school is actually like. The Library of Annotated Film Schools (LOAFS) not only provides a comprehensive listing of film schools’ web sites from around the world, it also offers something that the film schools themselves do not reveal: reviews and shared experiences from the film students themselves.”

“Somewhere between 11th and 12th grade, when most of my (then) classmates were taking weekend trips with their families to check out prospective colleges, I was goofing off.

I know, I know. Maybe I shouldn’t admit that.

But at age 17, a college education wasn’t high on my list of priorities. And besides, I knew what I wanted to do. I wanted to make movies.

I can’t remember exactly what drew me to movie making. But I was always intrigued by the camera and how you could look through the lens at something and bring it to life in a new and unique way. I know there are a lot of fancy technical terms to describe the cinematographic stuff I played around with, like forced perspective, snap zoom and the excitingly overused P.O.V. shots! But I didn’t think about any of that stuff. Back then, I had a VHS camcorder with a built in microphone and I had one movie making mission: I just wanted to have fun.”

“Last Wednesday, I decided to go back to my old Film School to attend a late Film History class. I felt like I needed a bit of a break from the work I do and instead watch what has been done before me. It was a very good night, until I remembered something I always hated about Film School. The “Film School Attitude”.

The “Film School Attitude” is the way that students behave while they are in Film school. Even through they are still in Film School, they believe that they know more than anyone else. Now, not everyone is like that. I wasn’t, but so many are.”

“When it comes to finding work after fim school, many people don’t have any idea where to look for it. In many previous articles I talked about connections and how you’ll find work with those. Now, I realized that many people out there don’t even know where to find those connections.

So here are the simplest ways to find set work. Sadly, since most of you who are reading this are only starting their career, you’ll find more free work than anything else.”
