Why film schools still matter for future filmmakers

Having tried both shorter courses and a diploma course in filmmaking, I discovered a wide variety of techniques and crafts that helped me understand what it is that I wanted to do. There are advantages and disadvantages of both, but when you’re starting out, you are not so clear on what you want to do.

I know I wasn’t, and it was important for me to be able to try more than one craft. Short film courses help you specialize in certain areas of film production, but they don’t necessarily give you a feel for what it is that you want to do.
