CollabFeature takes crowdsourcingto a whole new level.
Whereas Kickstarter has helped independent filmmakers raise the money to finance projects from hundreds and even thousands of supporters, Marty Shea and Ian Bonner’s “international coproduction film group” pools the talent and resources of dozens of filmmakers to achieve the same goal: a single, cohesive feature. Filmed on five continents, the organization’s first project, “The Owner,” beat the Guinness World Record for most directors of a film with 25, weaving a variety of characters, culture, languages and genres into a single narrative centered on a mysterious backpack. “The Owner” is available on DVD, Blu-ray and digital download now.
“I don’t think the idea of artists or filmmakers teaming up is particularly new,” CollabFeature cofounder Shea told me by phone from his home base in Detroit, citing anthology films like “Paris, je ta’ime,” which before “The Owner” held the record for the most directors, including the Coen brothers, Wes Craven, Alfonso Curón, Alexander Payne, Walter Salles and Gus Van Sant. “They’re short films, and they’re very interesting—they’re great and they’re fascinating on their oollabFeature—a case study in crowdsourcing filmmaking from pitch to production to distributionwn, but it seems to me that nobody’s really explored what we’re doing in terms of different filmmakers all contributing to a bigger singular story.”
