Commercial cinema has become much more business-oriented. Business plans are much more ambitious and money-oriented than the golden period of Hollywood, said celebrated filmmaker Michael Apted, better known to audiences as the man behind blockbusters such as Chronicles of Narnia and The World is Not Enough.
“Now business has gone to such extremes. Filmmakers are not happy even if the film earns $300 million. Filmmaking has become very difficult and stressful now because nowadays films are being made on grand budgets, while I used to make medium budget films that used to cost $15-$30 million,” he said.
He made the observation during an interview session, ‘In Conversation with Michael Apted,’ hosted on the last day of the Dubai International Film Festival (Diff).
“I have my documentaries that keep me busy,” said the director who has worked across documentary, television and feature film mediums throughout his illustrious career. His famed Up documentary is one of the longest-running series in the world. It started in 1964 with a group of seven-year-olds, and revisited the group every seven years. The latest instalment, released in 2012, was directed by Apted himself.
