Why Directors Must Understand Editing (Montage)

by Peter D. Marshall on March 1, 2008

dircameraman.jpgOf the many elements that go into making a movie, a director must have a knowledge and understanding of editing (montage) because editing is the main element that separates films from photography. Sergei Eisenstein (the Russian Director) influenced many early filmmakers with his innovative use of film montage. To see for yourself the impact he had on future filmmakers, watch the famous Odessa Steps montage scene from his 1925 silent film, “Battleship Potemkin” http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=W5mtaQm5lSI
