“Sunrise” – We need your support to make this film on child trafficking in India become a reality

My friend, Arati Misro, is Executive Producer of a film called Sunrise, directed by Partho Sen-Gupta. Arati and Partho are looking for your support to make this film on child trafficking in India become a reality.

Sunrise is a thought provoking and hard-hitting film that addresses the taboo of child abuse in India.

In 2007, the Ministry of Woman and Child Development published the ‘Study on Child Abuse: India 2007’. It reveals that an alarming 53.22% of children in India reported having faced sexual abuse. Nevertheless, the Indian Penal Code does not recognise child abuse as an offence and most offenders (local and foreign) escape with light sentences.

Partho’s aim is to meld social commentary and the thriller genre together in order to extend the film’s reach as, due to the popularity of fiction feature films in India, a fictionalised account will have a greater impact than a documentary.

The film’s intention is to generate discussion of this neglected topic among ordinary Indians and encourage legal action against those who target children for abuse.

Charity screenings will be organised worldwide alongside a general release in order to raise money for organisations fighting child abuse and to raise awareness of the problem.

Sunrise is a Hindi film shot on location in Mumbai India. They are currently crowdfunding on indiegogo.com. Their goal is $35,000, and as of April 13, they have reached $10,250.

How the funds will be used:

The film will be a low budget world cinema film that would première at a major international film festival (Cannes, Venice, Berlin, Sundance, Rotterdam, etc.).

Most of the major cast and crew members will work on expenses only or deferments. Additional funds will be raised from private and institutional funders. We will publish a statement of accounts at the end of the production.

The funds collected here will be used to pay for

Pre-production (Preparation) (30 days)

Shooting (20 days of 14 hour shifts/day)

Editing (1 month).

All that you’ll see on the screen will be paid for by you:

Cameras and lenses rental, location rentals, wages for some actors and child actors, electricians, carpenters, lighting crew, painters, stunt-persons, costumes, set props, make-up & hair, day-to-day shooting expenses, transport, editing expenses.

At the end of production we would have a film that can be shown to selectors and other gatekeepers of the professional film industry.

What can you do?

If you want to play a role in the making of this film, every step of the way, from pre-production to the big screen, please pitch in and tell your friends and networks!

Please visit indiegogo.com to donate any amount you can. As a funder of this film, you will have access to a weekly progress report and ‘behind the scenes’ videos via our blog.

Thank you,

Peter

UPDATE: Great news – A Paris based film post-production company (seeing our crowdfunding campaign) has made us an offer to participate in the post-production of Sunrise. In other words they would give us access to high end visual effects, colour correction, digital mastering, sound mixing all which would be required to finish the film after the first phase (preproduction, shooting, editing) that we are crowdfunding in this campaign.

    Hi Guys (Arati and Partner,

Yours was received via Peter, and was highly impressed with this your great move in film-making project. How I wish I am so dispensable at this time, but unfortunately, been currently involve in few demanding projects, which equally are very capital intensive. However, I will always be available on professional advisory role, and any form possible as time goes on, so let us keep in touch.

Well done guys, so proud of you. Please say hi to Peter for me too.

  • Ishaq Sidi Ishaq April 18, 2011, 1:57 PM

    Hello,
This idea is great! I personally have passion for anything to do with children, especially in this regard.
My name is Ishaq Sidi Ishaq, a pioneer member of the Northern Nigeria filmmaking Industry and currently a student at National Film Institute, Jos, Plateau State, Nigeria.
I think I can contribute a great deal from script-screen because similar issues of child abuse exist in my area which makes me think that my contributions would really count.
I’d be pleased to be part of this project, let me know if I could be of any help.
    Regards,
    Ishaq
