“The sci-fithriller District 9 was one of last year’s left-field hits. Produced for a modest $35 million, it has reportedly grossed over $200 million worldwide and landed four Academy Award nominations, including best picture.
It was conceived in New Zealand and shot in South Africa, but District 9’s success meant a lot to the Vancouver film community — particularly two of the city’s film schools.
Forty-two graduates of the Vancouver Film School worked on District 9, including director/writer Neill Blomkamp and his co-writer Terri Tatchell, who received an Oscar nomination for best screenplay adaptation.”
