“When James Cameron’s Avatar hits theatres this year, it will be the most expensive movie ever made. The director wants to change not only the way we watch movies – but also the industry itself.”

First – I have some friends and associates that work for (or have worked at) 3DH… I have also dealt with several Stereographers… We were looking at this technology more for other entertainment venues with our company, but also along similar lines of ultimate visual amazement.
3D filming tech has drastically improved in the modern day world – as well as 3D playback systems. The ability to “stereography film” a room, and then during playback, pan down and literally read the writing on the book in the case, is incredible.
Whereas I can definitely see this becoming the future (as we progress towards holography type designs), I think the “Avatar” folk are being a bit too arrogant in saying that they are the “new wave” and leader in this field. True.!, Avatar will be tremendous in it’s filming, but they better pray that their investment cost is overcome by sales in the theatres. Plus they are far from being the only ones making innovations in this field. And lets face it – this is the same tech you can see everyday at Universal Studios “Terminator” and other rides.
I have to also disagree with them about 3D technology in the home systems too. We already see dual video/TV projector systems being sold for the home that can easily do 3D movie projection (viewable with glasses). But the “Avatar” people miss the fact that there are also now 3D televisions that you can watch 3D effects without any glasses. I had the pleasure of seeing one of these systems in action, and it is incredible to be able to see full 3d effects without wearing any glasses at all.
A good web search for the “Phillips WOW 3D TV” will give you lots of info on this tech. Sony and other companies have their “3D-TV” versions as well. When you get down to it, the price for these “3D-TV’s” will be quite reasonable when compared to current Plasma TV cost.
All in All, yes I do see 3D taking a huge new step in the markets especially with the IMAX venues and other similar concepts. But I hope a little reality comes into play and also a serious look and wisdom in the 3D film budgeting process, because a string of 3D-tech losses to investors on some poorly over-budgeted releases could poison the well to investors for the rest of us trying to bring forth this really incredible technology. And for that reason I certainly hope “Avatar” cleans out the box office, so every investor will then want to push this tech with money for all of us.
Cheers!
Tom…
