Filmmaker Seeks Advice: An African filmmaker needs your advice on the best documentary books he can buy

by Peter D. Marshall on June 10, 2009

A filmmaker in Africa needs our help.

I just received a Facebook message from Ayodele, an up-and-coming film maker in Nigeria. He is asking if anyone can recommend any good Documentary filmmaking books he can buy for his company.

If you have any books you like, could you please post these recommendations in the “Leave a Reply” box below and I will then send Ayodele the URL to this post with all your suggestions.

Thanks for you help.

Peter

Both “Real World Digital Video” and “Digital Filmmaking for Teens” have a fair amount of advice on shooting “news-style” and crafting documentaries.

Hi Peter, here are a few book suggestions for Ayodele:

- Rebel without a Crew: Or How a 23-Year-Old Filmmaker With $7,000 Became a Hollywood Player by Robert Rodriguez
- Film Directing Shot by Shot: Visualizing from Concept to Screen (Michael Wiese Productions) by Steve Katz
- The Film Director Prepares: A Practical Guide to Directing for Film and TV

I hope this helps. All the best!

Ben
