The Director’s Script Analysis – Digging Deeper (Part Two)

Remember – the purpose of script analysis is to find out WHO the characters are and WHAT HAPPENS to them.

11. what is the SOURCE OF CONFLICT (incident or person)

12. what is the CONCLUSION? (how does the story end)

13. where are the BEATS (specific moments of a scene or act)

14. where are the TURNING POINTS (of each scene and act)

15. where is the CLIMAX (of each scene/act/story)

16. who is the PROTAGONIST? (the main character)

17. who is the ANTAGONIST? (could be one or more characters)

18. who is the MOST INTERESTING CHARACTER? (not always the main character)

19. where does the story TAKE PLACE? (location, time period)

20. what is the ENDING (the ending should be worth the wait for an audience – it should be an event in itself)

NOTE: once you know what the single question of the story is, it is the director’s role to translate that question through the beginning, middle and ending of the movie
